This museum is home to the largest medical archive in Europe, outside of London. Ancient petri dishes and pharmaceutical grinding bowls line the entranceway. Upstairs, there are Egyptian medical tools, papers and articles from medieval times up through the early 1900s, medical tools, mannequins, microscopes, doctors kits (including bleeder instruments), chastity belts, displays of anatomical studies, and a full-size turn-of-the-century apothecary.
An 1800s still at the very end of the exhibit hall was used for pharmaceutical manufacturing as well as for making liquor. Just about every apothecary had one in those days, a medicinal necessity. Paintings show doctoring methods, plagues, and living conditions from the 15th century to the 18th century. The museum is dedicated to Ignác Semmelweis (1818-1865), one of the greatest medical pioneers of Hungary.
A hundred years before the germ theory of disease, he pioneered clinical sterility techniques in surgery and child birth that led to his being celebrated as the savior of mothers. His eclectic ways earned him the animosity of Vienna however.
